Give Back All Year Long

The true spirit of the holidays can’t be found in this year’s most coveted toy catalogue. The true feeling of the holiday spirit lies in spending quality time with those you love, and giving back to those less fortunate.

With the holidays right around the corner it’s the perfect time to talk to your child about the importance of giving back, not only during the holiday season, but year-round. Check out these tips for giving back as a family all year long:

  1. Make Goals. Sit down as a family and put together volunteer or charity goals for the year. This will help your family map out the year in terms of giving back, it will also help you hold your family accountable, and teach your child that giving back isn’t a one-time thing but something you can do year-round.
  2. Do it Together. Make it a volunteer tradition to volunteer as a family on a regular basis. Whether it’s once a month, or quarterly, set a goal to give back as a family a few times a year. Choose a mission or organization that is near and dear to your family’s heart to ensure the whole brood is on board and excited about the opportunity to provide something to those in need.
  3. Make Donating a Habit. Up your spring-cleaning game and set a goal to declutter your home and donate to a charitable cause every few months. Not only will this help you keep a tidy home, it will also teach your children about the importance of giving (and not hoarding) toys and clothes they have of which they've outgrown. Encourage your child to go through their toys and gather all of the items they haven’t had time to use. Explain to your child that their donation will bring a smile and joy to someone less fortunate.
