Now that the school year is winding down and summer is approaching, everyone is starting to plan summer vacations, summer camps, and even activities for next school year. Here at The Little Gym, it is no different. Enrollment is in full swing for our Summer classes, Summer Camps, and our new Season Enrollment. As our awesome team of teachers hear more and more about everyone's plans for next year, we occasionally get a bit confused. When asking "Have you enrolled yet for the Season," we have had some people tell us that their kids are starting school next year, so they are done with The Little Gym, for now anyway.

Why as parents do we sometimes think that once we start one activity, another one has to come to a stop? As teachers, we think "Why oh why would you ever stop coming to class? Did you see how phenomenal your pre-schooler did today?!? Did you see that he made a new friend, that he was thoughtful of the feelings of others, and that his face lit up when I told him we were going to jump on the Air Track?!? Why would you want that to end?"

Strong, Smart, Friendly, and Fun

At The Little Gym, we know the best way to teach and encourage is with a smile. We challenge children to strive for success in a positive, nurturing environment. Each new accomplishment - no matter how small - promotes confidence and each successful experience motivates them to try for the next. Our teaching style is non-competitive, which means children are encouraged to strive for their personal best.

At The Little Gym, we get kids moving! Physical activities burn boundless energy, plus build flexibility and strength, develop balance and coordination, and encourage agility, rhythm, and overall fitness to launch a lifetime of healthy habits.

We boost their brains! We expand the mind and develop a love of learning by fostering listening skills, sustaining concentration and decision making, prepare for or reinforce school lessons, and nurture problem solving and creative expression.

We shape and mold citizen kids! We teach life skills like sharing, working in a group, listening and leadership - all skills that translate to a well-adjusted, well-rounded super kid!

Failure IS an Option

We even teach kids how to fail. Yes, fail. They learn that it is okay to fall down, as long as they get right back up and try again. They learn how to problem solve. They learn ten ways to not do a skill. But then, that magical moment happens when they figure out the right way to do it by themselves...an amazing "Ta-Da moment" for them, and a prideful moment for you as a parent. They learn how to share and compromise. They learn that it is okay if they don't get their favorite color bean bag, or noodle, or scarf, or spot marker. They learn how to ask their friends to share, trade, and take turns. They learn compassion. They learn how to celebrate in their friends' victories with thunderous applause, hugs, and high fives.

More Than Just Marketing

Major studies note the myriad benefits of early childhood physical development:

  • Children with a high level of physical activity tend to remain highly active throughout adolescence. Starting early lays the foundation for a healthy lifestyle.
  • Physically active pre-school children perform better in kindergarten and grade school. With age-appropriate exercises and group activities, The Little Gym provides a different context for learning.
  • Children with more developed motor coordination have a lower incidence of social and educational problems. By combining physical development with activities that promote sharing, listening and friendship, The Little Gym sets the stage for critical life skills.
  • Positive feedback tends to increase children's intrinsic motivation, having long-term benefits on their self-confidence and willingness to embrace challenges. Our positive, noncompetitive environment triggers children's natural drive to discover their own potential.

So Why Stop?

Keep the giggles and growth going! Participate in multiple activities. Go to pre-school and The Little Gym. Will it be hectic at first? Maybe so. But as super parents, you will figure it out. And your kids will thank you in the end for laying the foundation for a lifetime of success!

We are so excited to introduce a brand new Member benefit called Practice Time.

Awesome Birthday Bashes are Actually Pretty Awesome!

Tori and I have a confession to make: Until October, we had never had an Awesome Birthday Bash for our children. Even though we have been part of The Little Gym family for more than three years, birthdays for our oldest were always self-organized, self-hosted, and self-run.

After finally experiencing a The Little Gym party from the parent side, my first reaction was "Why in the world hadn't we done this earlier?!?"

Of course, you can assume that - because I am an owner - I have to say that. The truth is if it wasn't a great experience, I just wouldn't post at all (or put something from the marketing department here instead). So let me tell you why I personally think that "awesome" really is a good word to describe birthdays at The Little Gym.

Parents Can Enjoy and Relax

When you have a birthday party at your home, you are on point the entire time. I know that I have spent most of the last three birthdays either in the kitchen or at the grill cooking, only to step out during the main events. And of course, once everyone is gone, there is a disaster of a kitchen to deal with (not to mention the rest of the house).

With the party at The Little Gym, I showed up, helped get the cake in the door, and then I was done. I was actually a bit uncomfortable for a while, as I kept thinking "I need to be doing something!" But once other kids and parents showed up, I relaxed completely, and spent some time catching up with friends I only seem to see at these sorts of occasions. And this isn't just a dad thing. Tori had the same experience. We didn't have to worry about having enough food or when it was time to do cake or presents. We just got to relax and enjoy watching our daughter have a blast with her friends. Best of all, when it was over, NO CLEAN UP! That's what I'm talkin' about!

Kids Have Fun

And speaking of having a blast, the children at the party were playing and having a great time. Now you might think "Yeah, and they can do that at the pizza and ball pit joint down the street." And you are right. But there are three main differences from my perspective.

First, they had The Little Gym all to themselves. No lines, no older kids to get in their way…they could do everything they wanted to do, when they wanted to do it, without worry or frustration. Great for them, and great for us as parents, too!

Second, The Little Gym is clean. I think we all shudder at the thought of what has happened to some of those balls in the ball pit. None of those concerns here. As much as I have seen the team clean everything at the gym with an intensity that rivals some hospitals, it wouldn't have bothered me if they had decided to eat the birthday cake straight off the floor.

And finally, they had two team members focused completely on them. They helped them explore the balance beam and uneven bars. They organized games of tag and hide 'n' seek. And of course, they made sure that our birthday girl was the center of attention throughout.

Definitely Awesome

So am I biased when I say that Awesome Birthday Bashes at The Little Gym really are awesome? Absolutely. But that bias is because of our experience of having a birthday party here. Our daughter and her friends had a blast, and Tori and I had a great time because being able to actually focus on her instead of entertaining.

My only disappointment - that I have to wait nearly a year before we get to do it again!

Your Friendly TLG Owner,
Sean Ryan

Dear Parents and Friends of The Little Gym,

It is with great excitement that I introduce myself, Tori, and my husband Sean, and announce that we are now the proud owners of The Little Gym of Charleston-West Ashley! Owning a The Little Gym has been a dream of ours for some time, and we are excited to see it coming to fruition.

I have been part of The Little Gym family for some time. I began working for the previous owners at their Summerville location in 2008, rekindling a passion for teaching children that I had when I taught competitive cheerleading. While Sean is stuck in the corporate world (for now), he has always enjoyed attending The Little Gym classes with our two daughters, and is a strong advocate for The Little Gym's purpose and methods.

When Chris and Kathy decided to sell West Ashley so they could focus on Summerville, Sean and I were honored when they offered it to us. Their dedication to providing a great experience for your children leaves some large shoes to fill, and Sean and I feel we are ready for the challenge.

Though the owners have changed, what has not changed is the fact that The Little Gym is still the ideal place for your child to have fun and achieve those developmental goals you wish to see.

We are looking forward to playing an integral role in helping your child attain the skills needed for a lifetime of success. Thanks for being such an important part of The Little Gym family!

Happy Tumbling!
Tori & Sean Ryan
