the Little Gym Smithtown

The Little Gym Smithtown is all about the benefits exercise and play add to a child’s development. Our website and brochures have detailed information on how exercise and play affect each area of development, but here we want to talk about the benefits of parent’s play.

We know spending time with our kids is important. We are reminded to read to our children and to hug our children, but what is often left out is the reminder to play with our children! Taking the time to play with your child helps them feel important and valued by you. It is also a great way to “check in” with your child.

Kids imitate adult behavior when they play. This gives the parent the opportunity to see their own behavior through their child’s eye. For instance, a child playing with dolls may have the “mommy” doll reading to the “baby” doll and saying I love you. Or, the “mommy” doll may yell at the “baby” doll to wait until mommy has time. Parents might be surprised at what their child expresses through their play. Maybe you didn’t realize that you yell or maybe you only yelled that one time, but if your child imitates it, it made an impression upon him/her.

Playing with your child provides an opportunity to talk about what is going on in the child’s life. Kids will often talk more while attention is on playthings and not solely directed at them. A parent can learn how the child feels about school, friends, house rules, or the new baby on the way. Parents can guide the play to help facilitate talk on a specific topic, such as using a doll family to act out a new baby coming home.

It is important to focus on your child during play. Let the child feel they are the number one priority to you at that given time. This adds to the importance and value they feel. Of course, there are times when you have to listen for the oven or answer the phone, but try to schedule time into your day when you can tune everything else out.

Some parents say they are not “down on the floor” parents and do not know how to play with their kids. The Little Gym Smithtown provides an excellent opportunity to be guided through down on the floor play. To learn about our programs, please give us a call!

As parents, we try to teach our children to be good citizens and help those in need. Opportunities abound during the holiday season with donation boxes perched in many stores, bell ringers collecting coins, and more. This season, Long Islanders are recovering from Super Storm Sandy and a nor’easter and help is needed more than ever. Here at The Little Gym Smithtown we are proud to partner with our parents in teaching the valuable lessons of kindness and generosity. We provide charitable opportunities year round, but in the spirit of the holidays, we would like to share them with you once again. The Little Gym has partnered with Soles4souls to create Big Hearts, Little Shoes. Big Hearts, Little Shoes at The Little Gym is the first dedicated campaign for Soles4Souls focused on collecting children’s shoes. The program provides an interactive way for children to learn the value of charity and for families to participate in a cause together. The Big Hearts, Little Shoes program provides a unique opportunity for children to become ‘Citizen Kids’ and make a positive impact on the world. Gently used, overly loved, and outgrown shoes will be collected at The Little Gym locations to benefit those in need. The shoes will then be shipped to Soles4Souls, the world’s largest provider of shoes to families in need and to those recovering from natural disasters. Donating charitable items is a wonderful thing to do, but being kind everyday helps create a wonderful, happy environment for us all Together we can teach our children to be the kind citizens our world needs. Let’s celebrate their kind acts! If your child does a kind act and you would like to share it, let us know and we will shout it out on our social networks!
Developing confident kids, one hop, one skip and jump at a time is one of our goals here at The Little Gym Smithtown. We focus on confidence because it is a vital component of a healthy self-image, discipline, and character.

A child with confidence will face challenges and push himself to overcome obstacles. Without confidence, a child may view success as out of his reach and give up without trying. This can be seen in all facets of life. For example:
- School work: Confidence can be the difference between working hard to obtain good grades and not working hard because the child feels good grades are beyond his reach.
-Sports: Although natural ability does play some part in success in sports, training   and commitment are important as well. The child who feels their efforts will pay  off will work to achieve his goals while the the child without confidence that their  efforts will pay off may not bother to try.

-Friendships: A confident child will approach others and seek out friendships  while a child without confidence may shy away from social interaction.

Confidence helps children be successful in all areas of life. However, today’s culture limits some of the opportunities children have to develop confidence. Today’s parents remember growing up in an environment of independence. At young ages, they could walk to friends houses or walk into town all by themselves. They were trusted to occupy their time without checking in with mom or dad constantly. Today’s kids do not have these same chances to be independent and develop the confidence that comes along with it.
Times have changed and kids are tethered more closely to the adults in their lives. While this is important and helps to keep them safe, it also limits their opportunities to spread their wings and explore their world on their own. The Little Gym Smithtown has partnered with Amber Alert GPS to help parents feel more secure as their little ones start stepping a bit further away.

The Little Gym has teamed up with Soles4Souls to create Big Hearts, Little Shoes, an initiative to help spread shoes and love around the globe. Gently used, overly loved, and outgrown kids and adult shoes can be dropped off at our location during business hours. The Shoes will then be shipped to Soles4Souls, the world's largest provider of shoes to families living in extreme poverty and recovering from natural disasters.

Big Hearts, Little Shoes is a great opportunity for you to talk to your kids about charity and help them to experince the joy of giving. Go through your childs' closets with them and help them pick out shoes that they don't want or need anymore. Then, ask them to help you go through yours!!

While you're sorting through your shoes, explain how they will benefit other children and families in need. For instance, you could share that the shoes will help protect children from illnesses, helping them grow big and strong. They will also help many children attend school!!! This is something they can not do in bare feet.

Help us reach our goal of collecting one million shoes so we can change one million lives. Together, we'll all become"Citizen Kids" and create a better world for everyone.
