An Attitude of Gratitude
It's the season for giving. But more importantly, it's the season for giving thanks. Helping your child exercise thankfulness and gratitude during the holiday season will help reinforce this good habit year-round.

While giving is good for the soul, you might be surprised to learn that it's also good for your family's health! According to studies conducted over the past decade, adults who frequently feel grateful have more energy, more optimism, more social connections and more happiness than those who do not.

Now, researchers are finding that gratitude has similar benefits in children. Jeffrey J. Froh, an assistant professor of psychology at Hofstra University who has conducted gratitude-geared research studies with children says that "a lot of these findings are things we learned in kindergarten or our grandmothers told us, but we now have scientific evidence to prove them".

The study found that kids who feel and act grateful tend to be less materialistic, get better grades, set higher goals, complain of fewer headaches and stomach aches and feel more satisfied with their friends, families and schools than those who don't. Now that's a gift that keeps on giving!

Whether you consider your child’s physical activity to be exercise or play, there is no question that the value it provides is priceless. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, becoming physically active at an early age can pave the way for a healthy life as an adult, reduce the risk of numerous illnesses and contribute to the development of a healthy body image. Although physical activity provides countless benefits, here are just a few ways it can help your child:

  • Strengthens the heart. Physical activity helps the heart become stronger and more efficient.
  • Reduces blood sugar levels. Physical activity causes muscles to absorb glucose from the bloodstream and use it for energy. This prevents sugar from accumulating in the blood and can reduce the risk of developing diabetes.
  • Strengthens bones. Physical activity increases bone mineralization, helping build strong bones with greater density.
  • Enhances emotional well-being. Regular physical activity can produce positive psychological effects including improved self-esteem and reduced stress.
At The Little Gym of Roxbury, our proven curriculum is designed to help children develop healthy habits and enjoy an active lifestyle at an early age.

So whether they’re running, jumping or tumbling on the big red mat, the benefits they receive will carry with them for years to come.
