Have you met Mr. Dave, yet?!
Dave Mohr started gymnastics when he was 8 years old. As a young boy he quickly learned advanced skills and excelled at the team level. He competed in all six events and traveled throughout the entire country for competitions. His best events were pommel horse, still rings, parallel bars.
Dave continued gymnastics in high school and competed for William Fremd High School. He finished his career by breaking five school records, earning a state title, and obtaining nine state medals. He also set the conference record for the longest held handstand and was voted senior gymnast of the year. He was also awarded the John Brinkworth Scholarship for being voted the most dedicated gymnast his senior year. At high school nationals Dave placed 3rd in the all around and 2nd on the pommel horse and still rings.
Dave also earned a gymnastics scholarship to UIC. He competed on the pommel horse and still rings and won a conference title on the pommel horse. He also led UIC to three consecutive conference championships. Dave qualified to the NCAA championships and finished as high as 12th in the nation on pommel horse. He was also voted team captain and graduated with the highest gpa on his team.
Dave joined the TLG Glenview team not too long ago, but he already is well-liked among all our members, and he’s a great instructor, too! Miss Drew asked Mr. Dave some questions to help our wonderful students and families know him just a little Mohr…ha, more!
Drew: What sparked your interest in gymnastics?
Dave: When I was in first grade I was out doing handstands in my front yard and my neighbor told my mom to sign me up. I’ve been with it ever since!
Drew: Here’s a very important question. What’s your favorite food?
Dave: I would have to say lobster because it tastes so fresh.
Drew: Mr. Dave, what’s the best part about teaching at The Little Gym?
Dave: I get to teach kids the sport I love and have an impact on their lives.
Drew: Why do you think gymnastics and physical activity is so vital to a child and their development, and what do you see in your students at TLG that reminds you of your achievements?
Dave: Gymnastics is so vital to a child’s development because it teaches them many things at a young age. It teaches them to be disciplined because the sport is difficult and requires one to focus and not goof around. It also teaches them commitment and allows them to face their fears in a proper and safe environment. Studies have also concluded that gymnastics enhances a child’s proprioception and motor skills.
My students remind me of my achievements because I see how young and talented they are. They all started at a young age and many of my students are even younger than I was when I started the sport. Their potential right now is virtually limitless and I was that young I never would have imagined that one day I would compete against Olympians or travel all over the country to compete.
Drew: First of all, congratulations on your medical school acceptance! Where are you attending medical school and what is your concentration?
Dave: I’m not 100% sure at the moment. It will most likely be at Midwestern in Illinois or their campus in Arizona. I would like to specialize in sports medicine, dermatology, or pediatrics but I don’t have to decide until the end of medical school so I’m keeping an open mind to all specialties!
Drew: What’s your favorite quote?
Dave: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Phil 4:13). I chose this quote because I endured a lot of pressure throughout my life and this quote helped me through it.
Drew: Any fun fact you’d like to share?
Dave: When I was in high school I set the pancake eating record at a local IHOP with 22 pancakes!
We are so happy to have Mr. Dave here with us to share his knowledge and expertise. Feel free to stop by and say hi!
