Looking for Ways to Give Your Child an Academic Edge?

Local child development specialist spotlights recent research about the not-so-obvious benefits of physical fitness for children

As families look for ways to give their children the strongest start possible on the new academic year, Page Hetrick of The Little Gym of Exton offers some recent research that demonstrates how physical activity can help children behave and learn better in the classroom.

“It’s no surprise that physical activity helps support your child’s overall health and fitness,” says Hetrick. “But recent research highlights some of the more subtle benefits that can result from encouraging children to play and be active– whether it’s through organized sports, unstructured playground activities, or programs at kid-centered facilities like The Little Gym.”

One study*, published July 1, 2015, in the American Journal of Health Promotion, found a link between a child’s attention span and self-control and their participation in organized, after-school sports and activities. Study leader Linda Pagani of the University of Montreal and CHU Sainte-Justine Children's Hospital, stated that being part of a group with a common goal may help children learn to respect rules and honor responsibilities – concepts that translate into improved focus in the classroom.

According to Hetrick, these findings echo the experience children have at The Little Gym of Exton, where programs combine physical development with activities that promote sharing, listening, concentration, and decision making. The key, according to Hetrick, is that children at The Little Gym are learning these critical life skills in a fun environment that provides a different context for learning.

In a research review** published online recently in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, researchers found that unstructured, even risky play helps children develop other critical skills, like decision-making and social interaction. The review revealed that this type of peer-group play, free from adult intervention, helps children learn to get along with other children, take turns, rely on themselves, and negotiate solutions.

“At The Little Gym, we’re not surprised by these findings because we understand that taking calculated risks is an important part of growing up,” said Hetrick. “While we generally think of childhood as a time for safety and self-esteem, risk and achievement play equally important roles in forming identity and confidence.  Appropriate risk-taking helps improve motor skills, coordination, and overall confidence in being physically active. It also fosters sound decision-making and problem-solving skills so kids can more accurately judge risks in the future. So while there’s no pressure to be the best, children are encouraged and rewarded for trying their best and pushing their limits.”

Developed with a belief that experiencing and overcoming new challenges is the best way to develop the behavioral, social and physical skills that children need to function at their best both in and out of the classroom, programs at The Little Gym of Exton are designed to provide just the right amount of structure and adventure, allowing children to take calculated risks, safely explore the world around them, and experience success.

The Little Gym of Exton located at 260 North Pottstown Pike, Exton, PA is now enrolling students for the 2015-2016 Season. For more information, please contact owner Page Hetrick at 610-363-2350 or, visit them at, or go to

Building Success and Confidence in Children (Part I)

By Dr. Evan Brody

Your child enters a new environment, what is his reaction? Does he immediately jump
right into the situation or is he more cautious, clinging to your leg and refusing to part
with you? How a child reacts to new challenges is determined by several factors, but
the most important to their self-esteem is how you, as a parent, react. Here are some
factors to take into consideration when helping to build your child’s self-confidence

Personality. Take into consideration your child’s personality. If he is naturally shy,
he may be more hesitant than the outgoing child who runs right up to your child and
asks him to play. A parent’s encouragement and feedback can make a huge difference in
the child’s willingness to be involved in a given activity.

The Impact of Learning Environments. The learning environment a parent creates directly
influences the rate of learning, success and improvement of confidence in children. In addition,
what and how a parent communicates with their children will facilitate, or interfere with the child’s
success and self-confidence.

Motor Skill Development. Skill acquisition is a function of the learning process,
which in turn is dependent on the amount of quality instruction, proper practice and one’s
successful past experience.

Confidence. The by-product of the skill acquisition process is confidence. The more success
the child experiences, the better he will feel about himself.

Watch for the next issue of the newsletter that will discuss techniques you can use in every day
life to help build success and confidence in your kids.

Building Success and Confidence in Children (Part II)

By Dr. Evan Brody

In the last issue of our newsletter, we discussed factors to take into consideration
when helping to build your child’s self-confidence. In this issue, we continue to discuss
techniques you can use in every day life to help build success and confidence in your children.

How do you build self-efficacy and/or confidence? First, you as a parent can set realistic
goals and expectations based on the present ability level of your child. It is of vital importance that
age and development be considered in setting realistic goals and expectations in growing skills.

Specific Positive Feedback and Directive Practice. Two very important communication devices we
use at The Little Gym include Specific Positive Feedback (SPF) and Directive Practice (DP). Specific
Positive Feedback is The Little Gym’s method of communicating to the child what the child did well.
It is framed in a positive and nurturing context. Directive Practice involves telling the child what they can
do next to take the skill to a higher level. Use this at home. It works.

Structuring Your Child’s Environment for Success. Environmental structure deals with creating
an environment rich in love, support, encouragement, and compassion. Confidence is a consequence of successful experience. By creating an environment which nurtures learning new skills you can create success for your child. The results will be improvement in intellectual, social, emotional and motor skill which brings a greater ability to learn new skills.

This ability to explore and grow by the child leads to greater future success. Success will result in feelings of confidence and competence. The greater the confidence, the more likely your child will be able to handle challenging and adverse situations in his future!  Try these practices out and help your child be the best they can be!

Please donate your gently worn adult and childrens shoes at The Little Gym of Exton and we'll ship them to Soles4Souls for distribution to those living in extreme poverty or in areas affected by natural disasters throughout the U.S. and the world.
We'll be collecting shoes throughout the 2012-2013 Season!  Thank you for helping us to help this great cause!
This Summer, The Little Gym begins its partnership with Sprout, the 24-hour preschool destination available on TV and online for children ages 2-5, their parents and caregivers.  The campaign is called Kindness Counts, and is a long-term multifaceted prosocial initiative that supports the development of empathy in preschoolers by promoting small acts of kindness that families can easily do together in their everyday lives.  The Little Gym and Sprout have entered into a mutually beneficial partnership to support children in developing the life skills they need to live, play, and work alongside others.  Through engaging characters on favorite television shows, family support tools, and active gym experiences, children will focus on how to be kind to their body by staying active in a fun and exciting way.  Specifically, The Little Gym will be working alongside Sprout to help explore the importance of kindness and compassion.  Look for our gym kids' kind act paper chain in the gym!
Check out all the details on Sprout's website!
The best way to encourage kids to try their best is with a smile!  But don't take our word for it.  Research studies confirm that positive feedback triggers a natural drive for kids to discover their own potential.  Intrinsically motivated children are more involved in their own learning and development and tend to be more enthusiastic learners.
So how can you help your child become intrinsically motivated?  Praise your child's efforts as well as their actual accomplishments.  Offer suggestions in a supportive way and never criticize or compare their efforts to another child's.
Here at The Little Gym, we celebrate gold medal moments every day by challenging children to strive for their own personal best in a positive, non-competitive environment.  Each new accomplishment builds confidence and each successful experience motivates kids to try for the next.  Whether they're learning to land the perfect cartwheel or are learning to listen and follow directions, the confidence gained will inspire them to strive for new challenges with proud Olympic-sized smiles on their faces!

It starts with a sniffle -- next thing you know, the whole household is sneezing, coughing, and passing the tissue box around.  Before long, the common cold, or worse, seasonal flu, is upon you.
According to the CDC, up to 20% of the population gets the flu each year.  The Mayo Clinic cites the common cold as the number one culprit of stay-home-sick-from-school days in children.
While you can't completely germ-proof your child, you can separate fact from fiction to keep your family healthier, and save time, money, and frustration.  Start by putting some of the more common myths and misunderstandings to rest by reading about the top 3 cold and flu related myths.
Myth #1:  The flu vaccine causes the flu
Truth:  Getting a flu shot may cause symptoms that feel like the flu, but the viruses contained in the flu shots have been killed, or "inactivated," which means they can't cause infection.  While there may be some achy side effects that can sometimes follow the flu shot, it just means your immune system is responding and processing the vaccine.
Myth #2:  You're more likely to get sick if you're cold
Truth:  Despite Mom's warnings that you should bundle up, being cold does not cause a cold.  According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, infections prevail in winter months because they are spread when more people stay indoors for longer periods of time and are in closer contact with each other.
Myth #3:  Hugging and kissing are great ways to spread cold and flu germs
Truth:  Cold and flu viruses like to enter the body through the nose or eyes, so a hug or a peck on the cheek isn't likely to be dangerous.  Don't be afraid to give your sick child plenty of affection, and don't worry that a kiss or hug will spread your germs to him (or vice-versa).
Many parents recognize The Little Gym locations as safe and clean gyms for children.  We work hard to ensure each and every visit lives up to your expectations.  Daily and weekly cleaning and sanitation helps keep our environment sparkly and keep the germs away.
What can you do to assist us during cold and flu season?  As with any other illness, we ask that you do not bring your child to the gym for class if your child is coughing or sneezing more than usual, or has had a fever within the last 24 hours.  Our generous make-up policy allows your child to attend a make-up class by simply calling the gym to alert us in advance of missing your regular class!
Friendships provide children with so much more than just fun playmates!  In fact, friends are essential for healthy psychological development.  Many experts believe that a child's ability to make friends is the single biggest predictor of their success later in life.  Some even claim that it's more important than IQ and grades.
Programs at The Little Gym are purposefully designed to help children become "Citizen Kids!" by improving their social and emotional development.  Songs, games, and activities focus on listening, sharing, and taking turns.  Experiential learning activities help foster creativity, allow friends to solve problems together, and let them pass on knowledge.
Throughout the Season, we have special themed weeks to celebrate your child's friendships.  We have a Bring a Friend Week going on right now and we're all having some Serious Fun getting to meet new friends!  Encourage your child to invite one of their friends to join them for this special occasion.
You can also invite a friend to join you for kids gym classes anytime during the Season.  If you know someone who would love The Little Gym, invite them to register for an introductory class.  If you are a member here, you will receive Member Milestone points when your referral becomes a member!  So share the smiles, fun and high 5's with people all around you.  It's our way of saying thank you for spreading the word about The Little Gym of Exton!
We are excited to introduce a great benefit for our members currently enrolled in classes -- Practice Time!  What is Practice Time?  It's exactly what it sounds like!  A time for our students to practice the gymnastics skills they are working on in class.  While there is some structure to Practice Time sessions, it is not a class and your kids will have a healthy dose of Serious Fun at each session!  To take advantage of this additional weekly opportunity for the kids to "Get Moving!" please let the gym staff know which sessions you would like to attend.
Practice Time schedules are subject to change, but the current schedule is as follows:
Bugs/Birds:  Thursday 12:45pm-1:15pm
Beasts/Super Beasts:  Thursday 1:15pm-1:45pm
Pre-K:  Friday 2:45-3:30pm
Grade School:  Monday 4:00-4:45pm
While our specialty programs such as Karate, Dance, and Sports Skills don't have separate Practice Time sessions, those students are welcome to attend the appropriate session for their age group!
We look forward to seeing you soon!
Each New Year provides a new opportunity to focus on making positive changes in your life.  While this is a great habit for everyone, it's especially important for parents.  Why?  Beacuse the choices that you make not only benefit you, they have a direct effect on your child's health, too!
Here are 3 parenting resolutions to consider for 2012:
1.  Instill a love for physical activity.  Physical activity provides countless benefits. So, it's important to help your child develop healthy habits at an early age.  In addition to gymnastics, The Little Gym has several physical activities for kids, such as Sports Skills, Karate, and Dance, which can help your child develop a love for an active lifestyle.
2.  Establish healthy eating habits.  Keep healthy, yummy snacks on hand and set an example for your child with your own food choices.  Plan low fat meals that follow the government's MyPlate guidelines and involve your children in meal planning and shopping.  This allows you to reinforce your child's healthy meal options and helps children discover new foods and flavors.
3.  Focus on your child's positive behaviors.  Like adults, children respond to favorable comments and adopt behaviors that gain them attention.  Try to get in the habit of catching your children "at their best."  Providing encouragement for good behavior or for achievements in sports or other physical activities is a great way to motivate children to maintain good habits.
While you help your children develop healthy habits, don't forget to make resolutions for your own health as well.  In fact, consider resolving to get some well-deserved "me" time this year.  Planning some time away from the kids should considered a necessity rather than a luxury.  Plus, brief separations are beneficial for the kids as well.  Time away helps foster a feeling of independence and builds bonds with other adults such as a grandparent, a favorite neighbor, or The Little Gym instructors.  And if you need a parents night out, our Parents' Survival Nights have got your covered!
