You can help children develop fine motor skills with a The Little Gym franchise

The greatest benefit of The Little Gym® is the attention paid to developing fine motor skills. Developing fine motor skills in children, specifically, means training them to effectively use their muscles with coordination. This requires a balance of function between the brain (deciding what function to perform) and the muscles (the ability to carry out that function). Fine motor skills generally require dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Developing fine motor skills helps a child learn to open a jar, balance, or dribble a basketball.

Developing fine motor skills should not be confused with gross motor skills, which involve larger movements of the muscles. The activities requiring gross motor skills involve rolling over, lifting, running or jumping. They are equally important to the development of a child, and are also a focus of the programs at The Little Gym®.

Gross and fine motor skills tend to develop at the same time, generally when the child is eighteen months old. These skills are learned in tandem because so many tasks require the two skills at the same time. For example, a child who is playing with building blocks would need gross motor skills to sit upright and able to reach the blocks. Fine motor skills would be used to actually pick up blocks and place them.

The activities available at The Little Gym® help in developing fine motor skills as well as gross motor skills through games, gymnastics, karate, and a variety of other activities that are non-competitive and fun for everyone. This development, in turn, makes children more confident in themselves as they learn how to achieve physical goals. It teaches them social skills by putting them in a safe environment with other children their age. Parents also find joy as they have a venue for playing with their children in a constructive learning environment.
