The Summer Olympics are back once again in 2012!  We will celebrate by having our own The Little Gym Olympics during this week of camp – complete with Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and of course the Grand Awards Presentation!  Each day will offer fun-filled sports activities.  But be forewarned!  Along with familiar sports, we might try some fun Whacky Sports that have never been done before!

August 13th -17th

Hip-Hop Karate Chop!

As the theme suggests, this week will be an incredible action-packed combination of karate and hip-hop dance skills!  Whether your child is already a “dancer in the making”, an aspiring “ninja” – or just a curious little “mover”, this camp will be an energetic, rhythmic adventure like no other!

August 20rd - 24th

Sky Rangers!

“Please fasten your seatbelts and know that your Imagination may be used as a floatation device!”  The children’s imaginations will truly SOAR this week as they pretend to fly in helicopters, zeppelins, flying saucers, jetpacks – and more!  “How will they do this?” – you may ask!  Leave that to us!  Providing creative, fun-filled adventures is our specialty!

The Little Gym of Ashburn is proud to announce our Student of the Month is Kira!  Kira had a very exciting January, as she moved up from the Twisters class to our Aerials class.

Kira is eight years old, and has been coming to The Little Gym since 2010.  Her favorite thing to do at the gym is going on the high bar.  When she isn’t flipping around, she likes to play with her sisters, Anna and Loren, and watch Phineas and Ferb. Kira wants to be a teacher when she grows up, and her favorite food is chicken nuggets.

Kira started at The Little Gym so she could learn a cartwheel.  Not only did she learn a cartwheel, but now she is doing them with only one hand!  Kira’s mom, Lorilee, has also seen growth outside of the physical skills she has learned.  Kira’s confidence has grown by leaps and bounds.  Instead of being anxious about seeing things she can’t do, Kira now understands that she can learn to do anything in time. Lorilee didn’t know The Little Gym’s philosophy of “Serious Fun” before they started classes, but is so happy she found us.  After trying other programs that were very rigid, she was happy to find a place where her children could learn, have fun and not have to be perfect all the time!

Great job Kira!

With a suprise snow here in Ashburn this afternoon, I started to think about all the fun times I have had with my family in the cold, white stuff.  As the years have gone by, minor details may have faded, but the feelings have remained.

One of my favorite memories was a year my dad was sledding with us.  He didn't fit comfortably in the sled with me and my brother, and we improvised, using a huge, empty moving box.  I thought he was nuts getting that out, but that thing could move!  I think we ended up on the pavement of another neighborhood street a couple of times.

I also remember fondly my mother having warm cocoa ready for us when we came in, hands freezing.

Today's snow was also the first opportunity for my daughter to see it falling.  There are so many things that I don't think about on a regular basis, but seeing it through my daughter's eyes for the first time, it just renews my awe with the simple things.

What are your favorite snow memories?
The Little Gym of Ashburn team wants to wish you all a Happy Holidays!

Talking amongst ourselves this week, we were discussing how widely different family traditions can be.  Here are some of the ones our families celebrate:

  • Going to Christmas Eve Church Service at midnight.
  • Opening one gift on Christmas Eve, and saving the rest for Christmas morning.
  • Opening all the gifts just after midnight on Christmas Eve.
  • Watching football on Christmas Day.
  • Going out to a tree farm to actually cut a Christmas tree.
  • Having a seafood dinner on Christmas.
  • Elf on a shelf.

Personally, I am always interested in finding new traditions to start with my family.  What is your favorite tradition?

Late last week, Parenting.com put out their list of the best places to live and raise children. Number 1? Washington DC. If you are like me, you take being so close to our nation's capital for granted. I usually only go downtown when I have visiting family or a special event to go to. It wasn't until my daughter was hospitalized at Children's National Hospital last fall that I truly began to discover the city on my own. Driving down random streets, just to find something new. I drove by countless festivals, out of sight restaurants, and beautiful monuments I had never seen before. And every day I drove down Constitution Avenue, I HAD to turn and look at the White House. It made me realize just how much I take for granted on a daily basis. Washington DC has so many family friendly activities to take advantage of. Monuments, museums, parks, restaurants. I personally love the Museum of Natural History. The elephant that greets me there always makes me smile. And you will see me in the dinosaur portion for awhile. I guess the kid in us is always there, just under the surface. What is your favorite part of our nation's capitol?
What has motherhood brought to your life? This article on Time.com breaks down why it’s so great to be a mom. Plus, I thought they provided a wonderfully accurate description of how I generally feel watching my kids grow and develop at The Little Gym.
