About a year ago, I received a letter from a parent, whose child we will call Ann:

“Dear Ms. Tara,

I just wanted to send you a note thanking you for taking an interest in Ann and helping us with finding ways to increase her comfort level in class. It’s people like you who make big impacts in a child’s life long-term and I really appreciate it.”

First, let me tell you how much this letter touched me. I think I cried. As a “teacher”, we know that we do affect the children that we come in contact with, but we don’t always hear it. And it’s a nice thing to hear.

Ann was a tough nut to crack for me. She started class at 3 years old, almost 4, and was a typical Funny Bug; a little shy in my opening circle, but quick to warm up and participate by the time we started the warm-up. About 6 months later, things began to change. Ann would clam up during the warm up, and refuse to participate – especially if we ran in a circle. The rest of the class she was fine, but not during the warm up. I hadn’t ever experienced this behavior before, and I was stumped. I asked advice from other instructors at the gym, went over several possibilities in my mind (afraid she’s going to be ran into, issues with peripheral vision, etc.), but I just couldn’t figure it out. Her lacking participation began to spread, to the point that she barely joined the class at all. Her parents began to worry, as did I. There was nothing that I could figure out that was going on either in class or at home to cause this problem. I noticed that, during class, Mom seemed very nervous. She would stand at the window and watch closely, worried about her daughter’s behavior. I had an idea; an idea that made me nervous, as I was about to ask a parent to do something that I had never done before. Leave their child. I asked Mom to trust me, and to meet me at the door to the gym the following week, and drop Ann off with me, then to leave, and return at the end of class. She agreed! Whew! Nerves subsided.

It was like I had the old Ann back. She was a little timid during opening circle (what 4 year old isn’t sometimes?), but completely participated in the rest of class. She asked me a few times where her Mom was, but was just fine when I told her she was running errands. It was clear that Ann had begun to regress a little, which stressed Mom out. Feeling that stress, Ann preceded to regress a lot. Without the worry that she was being watched, she was happy to enjoy class as the stress-free 4-year old that she wanted to be. And after a few weeks, her confidence in herself had grown to the point that she was happy to have Mom and Dad there to watch her.

Miss Jane experienced a similar situation recently. I’m sure you are all familiar with the term “helicopter Mom”. Well one of her Super Beasts had a very NON-helicopter Mom. She was happy to stand back and let her little one do her own thing; but just knowing that Mom was nearby caused her to feel pressured. Some children have an innate desire to please their parents, and without even knowing it, become stressed out for fear of doing something incorrectly. While everyone understands a parents’ desire to see every single thing that their child does (especially when they are doing it for the first time), sometimes we just need to step back a little, give them a little space, and let them be a kid. Don’t worry, Miss Tara is still there, or Miss Morgan, or Miss Mercedez, we’ll always let you know if we need you. After all, we’re here to have fun, but we definitely take it seriously!

Isla “hanging out” during dance class. We have seen Miss Isla’s confidence in herself SOAR in the last few months in her Jazzy Bugs class. She is taking new risks every week, including walking on the high beam by herself and climbing to the high bar! Way to go Isla!!!

As Thanksgiving is quickly approaching, all of your instructors at The Little Gym of Smyrna would like to share with you what they are thankful for!

Miss Jane is thankful for all the people around her: her fun-loving parents, her spirited sister, her full-of-personality boyfriend, and many friends. And of course for all the people who have made The Little Gym of Smyrna such a great place to work. In two weeks Ms. Jane will celebrate 5 years of owning The Little Gym! She wouldn’t have made it this far without her family and all the awesome teachers, both current and past. She is also thankful for delicious food!

Miss Casey is thankful for her wonderful parents and the life she has lived thus far. She is thankful for all the wonderful opportunities she has received, including getting the chance to work with the wonderful families at The Little Gym of Smyrna.

Miss Cecily is thankful for an amazing, supportive work team. She is thankful to have such a wonderful family that she will be spending Thanksgiving with. Her little brother is away at UNC, and she will get to see him for the first time in three months! She is so thankful that he is having such a wonderful freshman year and even more thankful to get to spend time with him. She is also thankful for every one of her wonderful students. You mean the world to her!

Miss Cory is thankful that she has an awesome family. She loves that she is just as close to her in-laws as she is to her own parents.

Miss Mercedez is thankful for her beautiful family. They complete her, and she’s not quite sure where she would be without them. She is thankful for her new job at The Little Gym. She loves the staff, her kids, and their parents. You all make each day a joyous one for her!

Miss Morgan is thankful for her wonderful husband who listens patiently to all of her Little Gym stories every night when she comes home. She is also thankful for her funny, quirky, and lovely Little Gym kids for supplying her with a lifetime of funny happenings and great advice for when she has kids of her own.

Miss Tara is thankful for coupons. Because of them, she will be able to make broccoli casserole for her family without breaking the bank! She is thankful for her Mama, who also has a love for coupons, and will be joining her at midnight on Thanksgiving to start Black Friday shopping; and for her Daddy, who will be hunting over the Thanksgiving weekend, leaving the women to shop at their leisure. She is very thankful for her sister, who will make the long trek down Highway 16 to South Georgia a little bit more bearable. And while she will greatly miss all of her gymnasts this week, she is very thankful to get to sleep late!

We hope that everyone has a fantastic Thanksgiving, and look forward to hearing all your cooky family stories when we see you again!

Hello! I am Miss Tara, and could not be more excited to have the opportunity to communicate more with our families by blogging with you all! As many of you may (or may not) know, I have a degree in Writing & Linguistics, and while gymnastics makes me the happy girl that I am, writing is probably only second in line. (Well, I do love my kitties, so maybe 3rd). I have been with The Little Gym of Smyrna for over 2 years now, but I have had a love for gymnastics (and the kids that enjoy doing it) for much longer. I began my own gymnastics career at only 3 years old, and it took me all over the world.

My Mother decided to involve my sister and me in gymnastics due to a doctors’ suggestion, when I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. At that time, physical activity was just a good idea to go along with keeping blood sugar levels down. Today, some children are even able to control their Diabetes, and therefore do less amounts of insulin (meaning fewer needles!) by simple physical activity alone. Diabetes is absolutely not the only condition that can benefit from periods of physical activity. We all know that exercise is good for us, but at The Little Gym, it isn’t just the physical goals that we are trying to achieve. More than any type of strength or flexibility that I see grow and improve, it’s the face of self-confidence that I try to find. Not only find, but make a staple of that child’s experience with me every time that they visit The Little Gym. I can see that face in my mind right now, but maybe you haven’t seen it. I can guarantee that if you’ve spent a little bit of time around me during a class, you have heard it! You know those times when you’re sitting in our lobby and you hear this crazy scream from the corner of the gym with the bar during a Giggle Worms class? That’s Miss Tara getting really excited that someone did their pullover for the very first time (and if you haven’t heard me yet, trust me, you will, I get loud). Or that time that you saw an instructor running down the vault runway after a child? That’s Miss Cecily instilling confidence in that child by making them run faster, but also making them laugh along the way. Or have you ever talked to Miss Jane about her Bugs class? At all? Even a brief mention? That look that she gets on her face is how happy it makes her know that she is able to grow a child’s development at only 4 months of age. Trust me; we are all striving to find that “confidence face” in each child that we come in contact with, but we have a little secret… your children grow our confidence as well. Each victory that they celebrate, we celebrate too. Both inside and out.

As you may have noticed big changes are occurring at The Little Gym of Smyrna!  One of those changes includes this new blog.   I’m going to kick it off by talking about some of the other changes to come our way.

First off I am happy to announce that we now offer free Wi-Fi to our customers.  Many of you take the time to get some work done while your child is having a blast inside of the gym.  Now you don’t have to worry about finding a connection.  Just see a Team Member at the front desk for the password. Happy surfing!

Something BIG most of you know about is the change from semesters to the 2011-2012 Season staring in August.  All of our instructors are super excited about the new format and the possibilities that will open up to your children as they grow all the way up to Show Day in May 2012!
