Throw a special birthday adventure with Diego and his friends!

For several months, Dora the Explorer has been helping children celebrate special birthdays at The Little Gym. It’s been such a great adventure that Diego has decided to join in, too! “Go, Diego, Go!” Birthday Adventures are now available at The Little Gym of Port Orange!

During a “Go, Diego, Go!” Birthday Adventure, the birthday child and guests will travel through the rainforest and mountains of Latin America, working together to become official “Animal Rescuers” just like Diego! Along the way, the kids will encounter Baby Jaguar, the Bobo Brothers, and other friends from Diego’s world.

In addition to leading the fun, The Little Gym team will handle everything from invitations to clean-up so you can rest easy and enjoy the day! Many dates and times book up weeks in advance, so call today to reserve your celebration. Let us help make this the most memorable milestone yet!

A Safety Tip from Amber Alert GPS

Riding a bicycle is a fun, healthy activity for both parents and children. But it is important to remember that a bicycle is not a toy; it’s a vehicle! When you are in the car with your children, point out cyclists that are modeling good biking behavior, and take the opportunity to talk about why bike safety is important.

To make sure your biking experiences always remain fun, here are a few tips that can help keep your kid safe:

·                    Always wear a helmet!  Train your child from an early age that this is a life-saver.  It's like wearing your seat belt in a car.

·                    Practice the correct hand signals with your young children so that it becomes second nature to them. Your local state transportation department website has instructions on the correct hand signals and other bike safety tips as well as the rules and regulations that pertain to cyclists.

·                    Obey all traffic signs and signals and never ride against the traffic.  Motorists aren't looking for bicyclists riding on the wrong side of the road.  Whenever possible, ride your bike in the bike lane.

·                    Wear bright colored clothing or reflective gear, especially if you ride your bike at night.  Make sure that the bike has reflectors on it too.

·                    Walk your bike across busy intersections, always staying inside the crosswalk.

We've all heard the old adage "practice makes perfect". Here at The Little Gym, however, we believe it's more important that "practice makes progress". Which is why we're so excited to introduce a brand new member benefit called Practice Time.

Open to all students age 3-12 years old  throughout the Season, Practice Time is not the same thing as weekly classes. It's also not a time for free play. Practice Time is a structured and supervised period for children to reinforce the skills they're learning in class each week. It's an optional bonus session. It's a value-add for our members. It's an additional way for your child to benefit from Three-Dimensional Learning. {And best of all, it's free.}

Practice Time will focus specifically on gymnastics techniques...those essential skills that form the core of nearly every physical activity. Students enrolled in Pre-K, and Grade School Gymnastics will focus on the skills learned in class that week, while Dance, Karate or Sports Skills programs can use Practice Time sessions to develop complementary gymnastics fundamentals.

Please call ASAP to reserve y-our spot.  Space is limited

Think your little one is wonderful? Join the club! This club has no secret handshake. In fact, it’s open to all preschool-age members of The Little Gym, and all that’s required for admittance is a healthy curiosity and sense of wonder about the world.

Introducing WonderKids Club™, a brand new enrichment program that extends The Little

Gym experience for children ages 3-5. Self-expression and imagination are at the heart

of this engaging program that celebrates the awe of learning. Each three-hour WonderKids Club session combines a Funny Bugs or Giggle Worms gymnastics-based class with active learning and instructor-led, immersive play in the Multi-Purpose Room. Arts and crafts projects, creative songs and story time all reinforce the week’s Learning

Unit and theme.

For WonderKids, the Club offers a three-hour interactive learning experience, a threehour

structured play session and a three-hour exploration of their innate sense ofvwonder. For parents, WonderKids Club provides three hours of much-needed grown-up time and the confidence that their children are happy and growing in a safe, structured, familiar environment.

Joining WonderKids Club doesn’t require a special password or a longterm commitment. All children ages 3-5 may join, regardless if they also participate in another program at The Little Gym. WonderKids can enroll for as little as one session at a time, or as much as the entire Season. However often they join in the fun, all WonderKids

stretch their imaginations, as well as their muscles, and develop their communication skills alongside their gymnastics skills. And we call that something wonderful.

It starts with a sniffle -- next thing you know, the whole household is sneezing, coughing, and passing tissues.  Before long, the common cold, or worse, seasonal flu, is upon you.

According to the CDC, up to 20% of the population gets the flu each year. The Mayo Clinic cites the common cold as the number one culprit of stay-home-sick-from-school days in children.

While you can't completely germ-proof your child, you can separate fact from fiction to keep your family healthier, and save time, money, and frustration. Start by putting some of the more common myths and misunderstandings to rest by reading about the top 3 cold and flu related myths.

Myth #1: The flu vaccine causes the flu

Truth: Getting a flu shot may cause symptoms that feel like the flu, but the viruses contained in the flu shots have been killed, or "inactivated." which means they can't cause infection. While there may be some achy side effects that can sometimes follow the flu shot, it just means your immune system is responding and processing the vaccine.

Myth #2: You're more likely to get sick if you're cold

Truth: Despite mom's warnings that you should bundle up, being cold does not cause a cold. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, infections prevail in winter months because they are spread when more people stay indoors for longer periods of time and are in closer contact with each other.

Myth #3: Hugging and kissing are great ways to spread cold and flu germs.

Truth: Cold and flu viruses like to enter the body through the nose or eyes, so a hug or a peck on the cheek isn't likely to be dangerous. Don't be afraid to give your sick child plenty of affection, and don't worry that a kiss or hug will spread your germs to him (or vice- versa).

Many parents recognize The Little Gym locations as safe and clean gyms for children. We work hard to ensure each and every visit lives up to your expectations. Daily and weekly cleaning and sanitation helps keep our environment sparkly and keeps the germs away.

Here’s where you can help. As with any other illness, we ask that you do not come to class if your child is coughing, sneezing, or has had a fever within the last 24 hours. Our generous make-up policy allows you to attend a make-up class by simply calling us prior to the absence.

Friendships provide children with so much more than just fun playmates! In fact, friends are essential for healthy psychological development. Many experts believe that a child’s ability to make friends is the single biggest predictor of their success later in life. Some even claim that it’s more important than IQ and grades.

Programs at The Little Gym are purposefully designed to help children become “Citizen Kids!” by improving their social and emotional development. Songs, games, and activities focus on listening, sharing, and taking turns. Experiential learning activities help foster creativity, allow friends to solve problems together, and let them pass on knowledge.

Throughout the Season, we have special themed weeks to celebrate your child’s friendships. Our next Bring a Friend Week will occur the week of February 6th. Encourage your child to invite one of their friends to join them for this special occasion. To make the invitation even more special, click here to download some free print and color cards that your child can give to their friends.  Please remember to have your friend call us to reserve their spot!

You can also invite a friend to join you for kids gym classes anytime during the Season. If you know someone that would love The Little Gym, invite them to register for an introductory class. You'll receive $50.00 toward your next semester when your referral becomes a member and stays enrolled for a 20 week term. So share the smiles, fun and high 5's with people all around you. It's our way of saying thank you for spreading the word about The Little Gym!

Each New Year is a new opportunity to focus on making positive changes in your life. While this is a great habit for everyone, it’s especially important for parents. Why? Because the choices that you make not only benefit you, they have a direct effect on your child’s health, too!

Here are 3 parenting resolutions to consider for 2012:

1.      Instill a love for physical activity. Physical activity provides countless benefits. So, it’s important to help your child develop healthy habits at an early age. In addition to gymnastics, The Little Gym has several physical activities for kids, such as Sports Skills Dance and Karate which can help your child develop a love for an active lifestyle.

2.      Establish healthy eating habits. Keep healthy, yummy snacks on hand and set an example for your child with your own food choices. Plan low fat meals that follow the government's MyPlate guidelines and involve your children in meal planning and shopping. This allows you to reinforce your child’s healthy meal options and helps children discover new foods and flavors.

3.   Focus on your child's positive behaviors. Like adults, children respond to favorable comments and adopt behaviors that gain them attention. Try to get in the habit of catching your children “at their best.” Providing encouragement for good behavior or for achievements in sports or other physical activities is a great way to motivate children to maintain good habits.

While you help your children develop healthy habits, don’t forget to make resolutions for your own health as well. In fact, consider resolving to get some well-deserved “me” time this year. Planning some time away from the kids should be considered a necessity rather than a luxury. Plus, brief separations are beneficial for kids as well. Time away helps foster a feeling of independence and builds bonds with other adults such as grandma, a favorite neighbor, or The Little Gym instructors. And if you need a parents night out, our Parents’ Survival Nights have got you covered!

As we start the New Year, we’re thrilled to have helped so many children in the Volusia County area develop an appreciation for fitness and fun with our kids gym classes.  We’re still taking enrollments for students that want to join for the second half of the 2011-2012 Season. An Enhanced Program Structure!

Capitalizing on over 35 years of hands-on experience, a mountain of research and thoughtful feedback from parents like you, The Little Gym is launching an enhanced program sturcture designed to maximize the benefits of our already popular curriculum. Within this new structure, all of our programs will be broken into themed, multi-week Learning Units that lead to a natural progression of skills throughout a Core Season that follows the school year! Woohoo! Are you excited? We are :-)

Three-Dimensional Learning
As each success builds off the last, you'll see noticeable improvements in your child's abilities and self-confidence.  To make it even easier for parents and kids alike, we've categorized these new skills into a system called Three-Dimensional Learning.  Usinge physical activity as a conduit for experiential learning, here are some of the skills your child will be developing at The Little Gym:

1.  Get Moving!  Physical activities to burn that boundless energy, plus build flexibility and strength, develop balance and coordination, and encourage agility, rhythm and overall fitness to launch a lifetime of healthy habits.

2.  Brain Boost!  Designed to expand the mind and develop a love of learning, these exercises foster sustained concentration and decision-making, prepare for or reinforce School Lessons, and nurture problem-solving ablitiy and creative expression.

3.  Citizen Kid!  These activities teach life skills like sharing, working in a group, patience, manners, listening and taking turns- all skills that translate to a well-adjusted, well-rounded superkid!

These programs enhancedments will result in Big Learing, Big Fun and Big Grins.  And we think that's a pretty big deal.
