It is a New Year with new beginnings, which makes it the perfect time to reevaluate goals and make resolutions. Are you planning to lose weight? Stop smoking? Spend Less? For me, one of my goals is to make sure I am devoting quality time with my children. And what better way to start my resolutions, than to sit down with my son and talk to him about his own resolutions, or goals for the New Year. Talking to your children about New Year’s resolutions can be positive and motivational since it helps to focus on new beginnings. It also allows children to set goals and work on obtaining them. The important point to remember is that we should help our children pick attainable (trying to fly to the moon is a tad unrealistic!) and fun goals that they will enjoy reaching. If you are helping your children come up with new resolutions this year, here are a few ideas: 1. Financial– Help kids make goals to be financially responsible this year. Are your kids old enough for an allowance? How are they spending their money? Set up a bank account and allow them to start saving. Even little amounts will help them to start to learn money sense and value what they have. 2. Healthy Living – Many New Year’s resolutions revolve around getting fit, yet for many children who don’t need to lose weight, a focus can be to stay active. Playing at recess, riding a bike, starting a new sport – allow your children to pick their favorite activity to focus on this year. My son is excited to continue playing baseball this year, so his resolution is to practice more. 3. Educational – Depending on the age of your child this can vary, and since my children are young, their goals are simple. This goal can focus on grades, or something more specific, such as reading more books or learning more about a favorite subject. Keeping Goals Visual. An Important Part of Parenting Kids and Cheating How to Talk to Your Kids About Money 4. Helping Others – Volunteering at church or school, adding chores around the house, deciding to befriend the new kid at school, or just resolving to not pick on his or her younger brother. This resolution will help children think of others in the New Year. Make sure you have fun when you are picking resolutions – and unlike most adults, try to pick goals that they can reach! Memories of summer days will last a lifetime. Give your child the opportunity to experience the best of the season! Here are 10 experiences every child should have this summer:

1. Catching fireflies Fireflies are magical to a child. Staying up a little late to chase them through the grass is one of summer’s best outdoor experiences.

2. Walking barefoot Taking off your shoes removes the barrier between you and nature. You feel the grass under your toes and, somehow, the whole world seems a little greener.

3. Running a lemonade stand The opportunities for teaching your child about money, responsibility, and entrepreneurship are almost endless, but the real reason every child should run a lemonade stand is that it is just plain fun!

4. Flying a kite When you run alongside a kite, you feel almost as free as the kite itself.

5. Tending a garden Gardening brings you close to nature- right in your own backyard.

6. Playing in the rain Leave the umbrella inside or take it with you. Playing in the rain means stepping out of the ordinary. Get wet, stomp in puddles, and have a ball!

7. Spend time on a shore Whether you go to a river, lake, or ocean, spending time by the water is an essential part of summer. Building sand castles, swimming, collecting rocks, and investigating small water creatures are all part of the fun.

8. Have a picnic Family dinners are a time to connect. Why not move dinner outside on a beautiful summer evening? Children love the novelty of stretching out instead of sitting in a chair. Best part for Mom: no table to wipe down and no chairs to sweep under!

9. Go stargazing Staying up late to sit under the stars is a treat for the whole family. Teach your child a few of the constellations and then make up a few of your own. Talk about how big the universe seems. Or just relish in the simple beauty of the night sky.

10. A Day With No Agenda The best summer days are the lazy ones, the ones in which we head outside and see where the day brings us. In our super busy lives, children need time to relax and explore their world at their own pace.

This month my baby  girl Simone  turned four months old! It's a magical time at The Little Gym for her because it means she officially gets to start the Bugs class. The Bugs are the youngest age group of children who attend classes at The Little Gym. Many parents often ask, "What the heck can you do with a 4 month old who can't even walk..let alone crawl?"  I will soon be able to better answer those  questions as I sit week after week in class with my little one.  While I may be the owner, it's  very different being on the side as the parent.   As hard as it may be, I've promised that I will take a backseat in the class.   I am going to remain objective throughout the class and just take the time to be a mom with the other moms!
We've attended two classes so far. Already, I see why it's so amazing class for a four month old to attend. Simone loves it! She squealed in delight when we did exercises with the arms and legs, backward rolls on the big cheese, rides on the parachute and balanced on the low beam.
The class is designed with activities in mind for a young baby to help with muscle and grip strength, balance, motor control, spatial awareness, eye tracking skills, ways to develop the vestibular system and a time to bond with other babies
That's something my little social butterfly is really good at..making friends. She's bonded with so many of my gym moms. Now, it's fun to watch how she's engaging with other babies.  There are two little boys that were loving her polka dot pants. Apparently, they were pretty cool! I can't wait to share more stories about our Bugs class soon!
