We all know that Spring and Summer Camp are some Serious Fun for the little ones in our lives, but is camp more than just fun!? The short answer -- absolutely!
Camp helps our little campers grow and develop a sense of independence. Especially at a young age, learning how to make choices on their own in a safe environment is extremely important. By making good decisions during camp, they learn to have a belief in their ability to make decisions both throughout camp and their young lives.
Connections to others their age. For young campers (3-5) this is especially important. Growing friendships and learning how to appropriately interact with their peers in a fun environment is very important -- so, while their having a blast taking turns on the balance beam or the bars, they're also learning how to share, be patient and cheer on their friends and peers!
Finally, camps keeps our little ones bodies and minds alert and active throughout the vacation weeks and months.
When we say camp at The Little Gym of Fairfax is Serious Fun -- we really mean it's fun -- but, it's also about learning and developing our little campers into well-rounded young adults!

April Fools Day is tomorrow, April 1! We decided to search the internet for a few good, family-friendly April Fools pranks to play on your family!
Don't forget, share with us on Facebook if you have any ideas that you think others may love!
Prank 1: Take a screen shot of your computer screen's desktop and set it as your computer's desktop background -- watch as members of your family try to use the computer, but none of the 'buttons' will work!
Prank 2: Food coloring in Milk. Add a few drops of food coloring to your little ones glass of milk or to their cereal in the morning -- watch as they look at their milk trying to figure out what happened to it!
Prank 3: Cover the remote control laser with a piece of electric tape -- watch as your spouse or one of your little ones tries to change the channel, with NO luck! :)
Prank 4: Stuff a small amount of toilette paper or tissues in the tips of your child's shoes; then convince them that they're feet must have grown over night!?
Prank 5: Switch your spouse or child's cell phone background to a photo of a cracked screen -- watch as it takes them a moment to realize that, no worries, their phone is safe and in tact!
Spring is finally here... at least according to the calendar! A quick look at the upcoming weather forecast does show increasing sunny days and higher temperatures, so it looks like there is a light at the end of the tunnel!
Today, we thought it might be a fun idea to share with you a few ideas regarding fun outdoor activities to experience with your little ones! Below, we will share with you a list of five fun ways to get outdoors and get active with your little one!
1. Get Creative! Make a birdhouse or simply purchase one and make it a game to see the birds use their new home. You could even consider having your little one keep a log or journal about when the birds come to the house and what they do. Using binoculars, you're little one can get an inside peak at the 'secret' lives of little birdies!
2. Go on a hike and collect sticks. Hiking in itself is a blast and a great way to introduce your little one to the outdoors. Even if you're not able to break away into the thick woods of Northern Virginia, simply find a trail or bike path to take a stroll down! While you're on the stroll, pick up sticks and twigs along the way and when you get back from your hike, ask them to use the sticks to write letters or, simply just create fun designs/drawings with the sticks on the ground! It's a great way to get outside and explore nature with the little ones.
4. Here's a really fun and inexpensive idea. "Marble Launch." Take a long swim noodle and cut it in half. Then lay the two halves next to one another and race marbles down the center ring of the noodle! It's a blast and will have your little one outside for hours -- or if the weather turns, you're able to bring the fun inside!
5. Finally, work on their ball-handling skills through a fun game called "Bottle Bash Soccer." Set up empty water bottles and have your toddler kick the ball at the bottles to try to know them over. This is a blast and will start to develop their foot-eye coordination!
Getting kids active is of huge importance as our society offers more and more technology that leaves our little ones leading a more sedentary lifestyle. How do you get your child up and moving? Share it with us on Facebook.
Due to inclement weather, the gym is on a delayed opening schedule, today, March 17, and won't be open until 4 p.m. If your regularly scheduled class is held before 4 p.m. your account will be credited with a make up. Date night is a great way to get some time to yourselves without the little ones in tow. It gives you two time to discuss anything you need to without the little ones around and, it simply allows you that necessary alone time with each other.
Today, we thought we'd share a few fun and creative date night ideas for you to test out with your significant other!
This one sounds like so much fun! Try a "Waiter’s Night." Pick a night to “wait” on your spouse (or visversa.) You get the drinks, the snacks or prepare and serve a meal. Find his/her slippers, favorite game and spend an evening to yourselves.
Fake Tourist Date. We live in one of the coolest areas in America, take a look around our awesome city and do the things a tourist might do! This could be really fun!
Finally, try this one -- this is one of our favorite ideas! It could be so fun! Sit down and look through old photo albums together then, tell each other stories of your childhood and families. That's a great way to reflect for you and also gives your spouse a little extra insight on your childhood!
Of course, there is always the classic dinner and a movie. But, try this new spin. Go to a restaurant you've never been to or even a restaurant you'd never normally try -- branch out! See an old film instead of one of the new ones in the theatre -- mix it up!
Date night is great no matter what you do, as long as you're experiencing it with the one you love!
Just a reminder, Parents' Survival Night is held on the third Saturday of every month. Your child can enjoy 3 hours in the gym, while you test out one of these awesome date night ideas, or simply come up with your own unique twist! Children must be three and potty independent. (703) 818-9600.
Summer is just a few months away. Summer is a great time for kids to catch a little break from the stress of school work, but it’s also important to maintain a summertime schedule and daily routine in order to keep kids happy.
Routines help set expectations for both you and your little ones. Summertime can sometimes get away from routine, but today we’re going to share a few ways to keep some structure during the summer months.
Set a time for all morning activities to be completed. For example, some families find 10 a.m. to be a good time for kids to have brushed their teeth and hair, eaten breakfast and change into daytime clothes. Setting a time that these activities need to be done ensure that they day gets off to a productive start for both you and the kids!
Mid day activities such as pool time, summer camp, play time with friends or even chores can be scheduled throughout the week and, by keeping activities scheduled for about the same time every day, can help children maintain a sense of structure.
Finally, evening routine. Evenings can be filled with more low-key activities. Maybe during this time they can be allowed some time with electronics – perhaps some T.V. and computer time. This allows you to get any activities or chores or cooking you need done, while the kids are occupied.
Of course, all the times and activities can be reorganized based on your family’s general routines, but no matter how you choose to do it, keeping routine for your little ones in the summer months is very important.
There are only a few days left to get in on this awesome summer camp deal! In case you haven’t been with us all week and you need a refresher of the deal, the summer camp deal is “Reserve your child’s space in three or more camp days and get a Spring Break Camp Day for free!”
Today we’re going to share with you our final two new Super Kid Quest Camp themes: The Five Wonders of Foxhole Forest and The Super Grown-Ups Summer Camp.
The Five Wonders of Foxhole Forest will be held August 18 -22. During this camp week your child will enjoy an adventure through Foxhole Forest. Each day the Super Kid campers will be presented with a quest to discover the wonders of Foxhole Forest and become honorary members on “The Fun Foxes” Group! The campers are going to have a blast in the gym during this week of camp!
The week of August 24-29, your child can enjoy meeting and learning about super grown-ups such as firemen and policemen during camp!
Give us a call at (703) 818-9600 to take advantage of this special camp deal!
The kid's camp theme for the week of August 11 – 15 will be Hawaiian Hide & Seek! Who couldn’t use a Hawaiian vacation? During this week of summer camp, our Super Kid Campers will play a different game of hide & seek on a different Hawaiian Island! Your child will enjoy a game of hide & seek on an Hawaiian Volcano and maybe even travel to a secret waterfall – how about hiding with a sea of turtles on Turtle Beach – this week is full of adventure in the gym!
Give us a call at (703) 818-9600 to learn how to reserve your child’s place in this camp week!
Sometimes Mother Nature just won’t work with us and we get showered with rain and snow that keeps everyone cooped up inside! Today, we’re going to share a few ideas to keep the kids entertained and happy during the days that going outside to play just doesn’t look like a good option thanks to the weather!
1. Pull out the board games! Who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned board game? Find a game you and your kids haven’t played in a while and it will be like a brand new activity for the kids!
2. Two words. Puppet Show. This is a classic and it really never gets old! You can even have your little ones make puppets out of paper bags before putting on a show together! This will add an extra-fun element and makes the activity last longer.
3. Disney Movie Marathon. Pop some popcorn, pick out a few movies and snuggle up on the couch together and enjoy children’s classics like The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast or newer favorites like Cars, Finding Nemo or Frozen!
4. Have a picnic… in the living room! Get a blanket, make some sandwiches and host an indoor picnic with your little ones!
5. Finally, cook or bake together! What is a better time to teach the kids how to crack an egg or roll out dough than on a day that your cooped up in the house! And who doesn’t love to eat yummy snacks after a hard day’s work of cooking and baking?!
Rainy and snowy days can turn out to be a blast!
Today, we’re going to share with you two camp themes – Cheerleading and a brand new theme “The Race to Outer Space!”
Cheerleading Camp is making its debut for the second year in a row here at The Little Gym of Fairfax. Cheer Camp was a hit last year as all our awesome campers enjoyed high-powered gymnastics, dancing, cheering and, of course, teamwork! Your child will even be introduced to fun, age-appropriate stunts to try out in the gym!
Cheerleading Summer Camp will be held the week of July 21-25.
The following week, July 28 – August 1 will bring in a brand new theme – “The Race to Outer Space!” Our Super Kid Quest campers will explore a different planet every day and their adventure will include dodging asteroids and flying with comets – of course, all this is happening here, safely on planet earth, in the gym!
Give us a call if Cheerleading or Space Week camp sounds like a good fit for your little one to enjoy! (703) 818-9600.

The gym becomes a place of adventure at every turn – the balance beam, no longer just a balance beam, but a bridge they must cross in order to find the treasure of Magical Mountain! What fun!
Give us a call if you’d like to learn more or reserve your child's spot in Summer Camp at The Little Gym of Fairfax, (703) 818-9600.

Summer camp at The Little Gym of Fairfax is a blast! Each week offers a unique theme and each day holds a whole new adventure for your little one. This year, we’re excited to announce that we’ll be offering all new camp themes!
Our new “Super Kids’ Quest” Summer Camp is an adventure-filled three hours. Each camp theme will feature fun and exciting missions or “Quests” that the kids are challenged to complete each day.
Starting on Monday, February 17, we will be holding a special summer camp deal. When you purchase three summer camp days, your little one will enjoy one FREE Spring Break camp day!
Camp is available for children 3 and potty independent. The three-hour summer camp at The Little Gym of Fairfax is a fantastic way to introduce your child to summer camp fun!
For the next two weeks, we’re going to give you an inside peak at each of our new summer camp themes! Check the blog and our The Little Gym of Fairfax Facebook page for our daily updates.
Today’s inside peak – “The Search for Rainbow Castle!”
“The Search for Rainbow Castle” will be held June 9 – 13. Each day during this camp week, your little one will float away on a lily pad, climb the twisted tree bridge and even spend the night in pine cove cave – of course, these fun adventures will all take place in the fun and safe gym environment during their three-hour camp day. Each of the activities will require physical, cooperative and imaginative challenges for campers to learn to work together to find the “Rainbow Castle.”
Don't forget to check back over the next few weeks to get the inside scoop on all the new summer camp themes!
This week we have kicked off the Learning Unit "Imagination Alphabet" and this week's theme is "'F' is for Friend."
Kids have been exploring the gym, learning about letters, letter sounds and words -- all while having a blast in the gym! We are teaching all these important lessons through movement, music, games and activities in the gym.
Who knew you could learn letters and letter sounds through music and movement -- we did! The kids have been acting out letter shapes with their bodies, performed activities and movements associated with certain letters and they even worked together to create letter 'blends' with their classmates.
Just a reminder, the kid's POP's for this week is to identify sounds within a word. Doing this helps you child learn to "sound out" words when reading. When chatting with your child, randomly challenge your child to guess what word you are suggesting by giving them the sound of the first letter of the word! For example, you might say "Okay, it's getting late, please get ready for "Beh -- "Beh" yes, that's right -- Bed! Then ask your child if they know what letter makes that sound.
1. Sort the different colored blocks. Sorting the different colored LEGO blocks is a fun and easy way for your little ones to recognize colors and use their fine motor skills to place the blocks in there respective color piles.
2. Replicate structures. This one works best with your older toddlers. Show your little one an object and have them use the blocks to build a similar object with the blocks. This helps to develop their problem solving skill ability.
3. Finally, blow bubbles and have your little one use the LEGO DUPLO blocks to pop the bubbles. This will enable your little one to develop their hand/eye and tracking abilities.
Building healthy bodies and minds is already a part of The Little Gym experience. Now our currently enrolled members can enjoy our complimentary Let's Build, Let's Play program on Tuesday, February 11th from 3:30-4:00 p.m. and Wednesday, February 26th from 11:15-11:45 a.m.
You and your child can also enjoy building with LEGO® DUPLO® preschool building toys! Children ages 19 months through 3 years old will have an opportunity to build upon their problem solving, imagination and socialization skills through new, exclusive activities and programs.

Like most Northern Virginia families, daily life is consumed by working late, commuting and juggling kids schedules, for the Mussmon’s (Chad, Tiffany, Noah 16, Grace 14, Jeremiah 12, Graham 9, Vaughn 8) that is compounded with owning and operating six The Little Gym franchises in Northern Virginia and a few more sport games on any given week night. “We go non-stop, self-consuming, unintentionally forgetting about the world around us.” Luckily, we were able to get a wakeup call through a charity program call, “Soles4Souls.”
The Little Gym’s of Nothern VA partnered with Soles4Soles and with the help of The Little Gym members and our surrounding communities we were able to collect over 10,000 pairs shoes and travel to Haiti for an experience of a lifetime. Soles4Souls is a global not-for-profit institution dedicated to fighting the devastating impact and perpetuation of poverty. The organization advances its anti-poverty mission by collecting new and used shoes and clothes from individuals, schools, faith-based institutions, civic organizations and corporate partners, then distributing those shoes and clothes both via direct donations to people in need and by provisioning qualified micro-enterprise programs designed to create jobs in poor and disadvantaged communities. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Soles4Souls is committed to the highest standards of operating and governance, and holds a four-star rating with Charity Navigator.
Our customers at The Little Gym, young children, were, for the first time, able to understand poverty. I was able to have meaningful conversations with children at The Little Gym about the people in the world who do not have the basic necessity of shoes. They could contribute by bringing in their outgrown used shoes. They understood the impact of just one donation of a pair of shoes and were excited for the opportunity to be able to make a difference in another child’s life.
When I saw the impact it was having on my family and how it forced us to slow down a little and look around at the needs to others in the world, I knew we needed to travel with Soles4Souls to help distribute shoes, serve and experience another culture. That’s where the adventure began.
All seven of us embarked, for the first time, out of the country. Traveling with five minor children to a third world country may be deemed a little insane, but it changed our life and bonded us stronger than ever. The country of Haiti is beautiful, but poverty and tragedy scar the land. However, people are people, and as we fitted children with shoes, washed their feet, exchanged smiles, played and laughed, it became apparent that the children of Haiti were giving my family more than we could ever give them materially. From orphanages to schools each experience poured out the same results.
Each day we grew closer as a family. Each day we observed more poverty. We were somewhat scared in a few situations. Exiting the airport into a crowd that wanted to carry your bag for a dollar (this could feed their family for a day). A fight broke out on the street near us, the driving was dangerous and treacherous (beltway traffic seems mild now.) We had to ride in the back of a dump truck when the clutch went out on our van through the streets of Port Au Prince. Motorcycles with three riders; usually a including a small child or baby, would zoom past us. We witnessed tent cities that were packed with people and found others who called very simple dwellings their home. The common denominator, however, was smiles and gratitude. And that is what stuck with us, not the poverty, but the joy among the obvious struggle.
This world and the needs of this world are huge. It is important for us in Loudoun County to push our kids for the best grades, to be over achievers and succeed, but I am doing a disservice to my children if that learning process does not include love, service, humility and a strong understanding of the world outside of Northern Virginia. I know this experience has shaped their lives and my family’s future. We will travel again, I cannot imagine life without more experiences like this and I encourage others to take a risk, enjoy service and embark on a life-changing adventure.

If your travel plans include a long road trip with the kids, then we have a few tips and games to ensure a smooth trip to Grandma's house.
Here is a game that not only teaches counting, but is also fun and simple! The game is called "Race to 20." Here are the instructions: Two players take turns counting to twenty. On each turn, a player can say one or two numbers. (If the first says "One," the second might say "Two, three.") Try to force your opponent to reach twenty first.
Who can resist the classic game of "I Spy?!" In case you need a little refresher on how to play here at the instructions for this fun (and easy) road trip game for the kids! Someone says that they 'spy' a certain color. Whoever guesses the item the 'spier' is referring to gets to go next. You could limit the items to what's in the area. Or you could get tricky and play I Spied, selecting items that you've already passed.
If your little ones start to get 'gamed out' then be sure to have a back-up plan. Maybe a coloring book or even a travel DVD player so they can watch movies until your arrival!

Gymnastics is not only a fun way to release the extra energy that young girls have, but it also serves as an outlet for developing balance, coordination, social skills and gets kids active!
The CDC has labeled this generation as the most inactive generation in history, due to the growth in the technology and popularity of video games, computers, social media sites and more. The CDC also has released a statement regarding childhood obesity as a serious problem. By encouraging young girls to get involved in physical activity at a young age helps to promote healthy lifestyles into their teenage and adult years. So, here are a couple reasons why Girls Gymnastics is such a great activity for your child to get involved with:
1. IT’S FUN!
2. Develop your young child’s strength, flexibility, coordination and balance

Picking out and balancing activities for your toddler can be a difficult task. But, the benefits of including extracurricular activities in your child’s agenda, specifically toddler gymnastics, are many.
Toddler Gymnastics classes offer numerous benefits and, today, we’re going to outline a few of them.
1. Overall physical health and development. As you know, toddlers are growing and are full of energy. Through gymnastics your child can develop healthy active-lifestyle habits. In fact, the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports states that they “encourage moderate and vigorous physical activity among youth is important as the habits learned as a child are often carried into adulthood.”
2. Toddler Gymnastics also promotes a developing toddler’s social skills! Getting involved in gymnastics is a great way to help children learn how to interact with their peers – from taking turns to sharing to learning how to encourage and support one another!
3. Toddler gymnastics also progresses your child’s strength, coordination and balance which are skills needed for any type of physical activity!
4. Lastly, it’s fun! Gymnastics is not only a great tool for developing physical skills, it’s also a fun way to grow and meet new people!

Mommy and Me Classes, also known as “Parent and Child Classes,” is a great way to create a lasting bond between parent and child, but mommy and me classes also have many other benefits:
1. Mommy and me gym classes can help your child boost not only their physical development, but also their cognitive and social development as well. At The Little Gym of Fairfax, our Mommy and me classes are structured to incorporate music, colors and class themes that teach little ones to take turns and share with their peers all while they have a blast in the gym.
2. Mommy and me classes boost your child’s physical development. Through structured and age-appropriate activities, your child will have the opportunity to develop their balance and coordination in a safe, padded gym environment.
3. It’s not just social for baby – it’s social for you too! Because Mommy and me or Parent and Child classes incorporate Moms and Dads in the class, you’re able to meet knew people and create new friendships with parents who have children your child’s age!
4. Finally, mommy and me classes can help your child prepared for school. Because classes are structured and it’s not just “Free Play,” it introduces your child to structured activities, similar to how pre-school and Kindergarten classes will be set up. It not only introduces them to structure, it also teaches them how to follow directions and interact appropriately with classmates.
At The Little Gym of Fairfax, when we say we take fun seriously, we really mean it! Our Mommy and Me (Parent/Child classes) are full of fun in the gym, but the curriculum and structure of our classes are meant to help your child develop both physically, mentally and socially into a happy, healthy active child!

Over the past several months The Little Gym of Fairfax and Soles4Souls have turned to the people of Fairfax and nearby Northern Virginia communities to help collect shoes for children in need. The shoes were shipped last week and a whopping 8,250 shoes were collected locally!
The Little Gym of Fairfax franchise owner, Chad Mussmon, his family and local community members, packaged, box-up and loaded the truck with the donated shoes. Mr. Mussmon then delivered the truck filled with shoes to New Jersey, where Soles4Souls leaders were waiting to collect the shoes and distribute the donated shoes across the world to people in need!
The Little Gym of Fairfax owner, Chad Mussmon was quoted saying, “It’s not only great to see how many people have come out to donate shoes over the past few months, but it’s really awesome to see the children helping package and transport the shoes – they really get an understanding of why donating to others is so important.”
The Little Gym International and Soles4Souls teamed up nationwide. The total number of shoes collected across the nation was a little over 42,000 pairs of shoes. The collected shoes will protect children from harsh conditions, disease and enable them to attend school as well.
Thanks to the community members who donated shoes or helped box and ship them to the children in need!
